The Written Expression and Comprehension course aims to help second-year English students develop the ability to understand, analyze, and produce clear academic writing. By the end of the module, students will be able to apply effective reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, inference, and identifying main ideas to comprehend a variety of texts. They will expand their academic vocabulary and use it appropriately in writing. The course also develops students’ ability to plan, organize, and structure coherent paragraphs and essays with clear introductions, well-developed body paragraphs, and logical conclusions. Students will learn to construct arguments using evidence, apply unity and coherence, and use transitions effectively. Additionally, the course strengthens critical thinking skills by encouraging students to interpret, evaluate, and synthesize information from different sources. Throughout the module, students will follow the writing process—pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing—to improve their work, engage in peer-review activities, and use feedback to build stronger writing practices. The course also introduces essential academic conventions such as formal style, proper referencing, and avoiding plagiarism, while fostering independent learning and reflective awareness of writing strengths and weaknesses.
