This course offers an inviting introduction to Modernism, a bold period in literature where writers broke traditional rules to find new ways of telling stories. We will focus on how these authors explore the inner thoughts, feelings, and changing worlds of their characters. By reading three iconic short stories, you will practice analyzing deep themes and unique writing styles in clear, accessible English.

We will begin with James Joyce, exploring the "epiphany"a sudden moment of realization in a story from Dubliners. Next, we will study Ernest Hemingway, focusing on his "Iceberg Theory," where much of the story's meaning is hidden beneath a simple and direct writing style. Finally, we will look at William Faulkner, who uses complex perspectives to show how the past influences the present.
